What is ICD-10?

The United States was the last industrialized nation with sophisticated healthcare to make the switch from ICD-9 to ICD-10 in October 2015. Bills must now contain ICD-10 diagnosis codes or your practice won’t be reimbursed by insurance for covered procedures. Now that practices are using ICD-10, additional codes were added to various groupings to give more detail and room for growth that simply wasn’t possible with ICD-9.

ICD-10 increased the available diagnosis codes from 14,000 to nearly 68,000 available codes under ICD-9. The switch also enhanced the ability of medical providers to track patient data (medical conditions, inpatient procedures, etc.) and update the outdated terms used with previous system. However, this comes with a sacrifice of efficiency and a number of coding complexities.
